Communicating with someone who has Alzheimer’s or dementia is not easy.
The symptoms of dementia affect memory, thinking and social capabilities. All of which affect a person’s daily functioning. The psychological and cognitive changes that go along with someone who is dealing with dementia can be overwhelming. Personally I know firsthand how difficult it is to realize that your loved one is no longer able to truly express themselves entirely. We want to help and care for them as much as possible but because of a communication barrier we feel as though we have failed. It is important as a family member or caregiver to know what to expect. For someone with dementia words can take on new meanings or even be lost completely. Here are a few tips to help make the communication stress-free.
